“…Previous research shows a persistent pattern of mistreatment by patients against women and visible minority health care professionals that continues throughout the career trajectory from medical student to seasoned physician. 1–21,28,29 Our study adds to this literature with rich qualitative descriptions of how medical students experience mistreatment by patients, which appears to be frequently catalyzed by biased perceptions of students’ gender, race, or ethnicity. The students in our study described a simultaneous experience of harm and a desire to suppress or overcome this harm, and sometimes, they indicated that their long-term career decisions shifted as a result.…”
