Wireless multihop networks consist of numbers of wireless nodes. Hence, introduction of failure detection and recovery is mandatory. Until now, various failure detection and recovery methods such as route switch and multiple routes detection have been proposed based on an assumption with stop failure model. However, the assumption that failed wireless nodes never transmit any messages too restricts the area where the proposed methods can be applied. In order to solve this problem, we propose a novel failure detection and notification method that supports not only stop failure but also Byzantine failure. That is, it is possible for failed wireless nodes to transmit malicious messages not according to the data message transmission and the failure detection and notification protocols unconsciously due to failure or even intentionally. Here, the design of failure detection and notification protocols is critical. In this paper, Byzantine failures in an intermediate node are detected by its multiple neighbor wireless nodes cooperatively since the neighbor wireless nodes are also vulnerable and might transmit erroneous failure notifications. From the performance viewpoint, no additional control messages are required to be transmitted while no failure wireless node is detected, i.e., in usual data message transmissions.

Ad hoc networks are wireless networks that can operate without infrastructure and without centralized network management; they may contain nodes with limited battery power. Hence, energy conservation is a critical requirement in the design of routing protocols for ad hoc networks. Clustering has been proposed as a promising method for simplifying the routing process in mobile ad hoc networks when network size increases. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient multipath routing protocol, called ES-CMR (Energy aware and Stable Cluster-based Multipath Routing protocol), which preserves the residual energy of nodes and increases the network lifetime. To achieve this goal, we use an objective model to select energy-efficient paths with stable links. Simulation results demonstrate that ES-CMR has better performance in terms of energy consumption, network lifetime and end-to-end delay.

Abstract-Routing in ad hoc mobile networks is a problem which has not yet been satisfactorily solved. Traditional routing techniques are not well adapted to new networks. Indeed, their lack of reactivity with respect to the traffic and network changes means traditional routing techniques cannot easily be used except at the price of over-dimensioning of the network resources (network bandwidth, node memory utilization, node CPU load, etc.). In recent years the research community has been interested in the improvement of ad hoc routing, and among the solutions suggested multipath routing has been considered. Multiple paths are exploited in order to ensure reliability and a quick reaction to changes in topology with a low overhead generated by the control messages. In this article we present an extension of the well-known routing protocol AODVM (Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector Multipath). We propose to improve the multipath routing strategy with a path classification to allow the paths with the best energy level to be chosen.
