Survey and performance evaluation on some automotive semi-active suspension control methods: A comparative study on a single-corner model

Abstract: In this paper, an overview and a benchmark of some semi-active suspension control strategy performances is proposed. Based on a recent result of the authors, where the optimal semi-active performance trade-off was addressed, here, a complete benchmark to evaluate any controlled semi-active suspensions is proposed, and applied on different control approaches. The present paper aims at providing a picture -as complete as possible -of the present state of the art in the semi-active suspension control field in ter… Show more

“…It is a typical method to attach devices [18] or to study the failure modes [19] to prevent structures from being destroyed under earthquake. Moreover, in the field of vehicle control, the semi-active suspension [20][21][22][23] and active suspension [24] play an important role in guaranteeing both safety and comfort of cars. In this way, devices or equipment suitable for different structures or applicable to different scenarios (e.g., [25][26][27][28][29][30]) are put forward to reduce the structure's response under different dynamic loads.…”

“…Enlightened by various structural control methods [25][26][27][28][29][30] and semi-active suspensions [20][21][22][23] as well as active suspensions [24], a lateral damping buffer is proposed to retrofit buildings in debris flow-prone areas. Specifically, it is a combination of traditional buffer and shock absorber.…”

“…Although a smooth nonlinear control is guaranteed, this approach does not ensures the dissipative condition in design stage. Readers are referred to [15] for a more detailed survey of semi-active controls. This paper considers the vibration reduction of a simplified quarter car model using semi-active dampers with adjustable viscous damping coefficients.…”

“…Reference [7] proposed a novel model-free control strategy named Combinatory quasi-Optimum Damping (COD) Controller which can optimize damping force of the tunable dampers. Some other modern methodologies have also been widely proposed to improve the performance of controller, such as the modelbased control strategies by using robust [8][9][10], nonlinear [11,12], and optimal control theory [13]. Heuristic control methodologies have good performances with high feasibility to be implemented if the accurate vehicle mathematic model or the observer is not available [14][15][16].…”
