Surveillance of Phthalate Esters in Surface Waters and Sediments in the United States

Abstract: Four phthalate ester products (three alkyl benzyl and one dialkyl phthalate) were monitored in industrial areas of the United States over 3 years (1980)(1981)(1982). Documented methodology and quality assurance practices for both sample collection and analysis assured validity of results. The geometric mean concentration (corrected for method losses) for the three benzyl phthalates was less than 0.6 &L in surface waters and less than 0.2 Fglg in sediments. Only 20 of 205 water samples (10%) and 13 of 122 sedim… Show more

“…The recovery loss can also be significantly improved for many chemicals by avoiding dryness using a gentle stream of nitrogen (Sabik and Jeannot, 1998;Pablos-Espada et al, 1999;Lyytikäinen et al, 2003;Zhang et al, 2007). The nitrogen gas purge process is often combined with the LLE or SPE process and sample solvent volume is reduced to approximately 2 mL or less at around 40°C and atmospheric pressure (Michael et al, 1984;Weinberg and Glaze, 1997). There are a variety of processes available such as the argon gas purge (Ene et al, 2012) and the high temperature purge at 80°C (Fernández-Ramos et al, 2013).…”
