The change in the development paradigm to a “green economy” requires the management of oil palm plantations (as one of the national strategic industries) to make more use of biodiversity in increasing its productivity. In addition to reducing production costs (the use of chemical fertilizers, chemical pest and weed control), optimizing the use of biodiversity in oil palm agrosystems will be able to realize the management of oil palm plantations in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner. This study aims to identify the potential for species diversity and the role of birds in oil palm plantation agrosystems. Data collection on the potential for species diversity was carried out on six types of oil palm plantation land cover at PT Selatan Agro Makmur Lestari, South Sumatra with the transect line method along 1 km with a width of 50 meters. As for the role of various types of birds in the ecosystem, a literature review is carried out. The highest number of species and individuals was found in shrubs as many as 19 species and 69 individuals. On the other hand, the lowest number of species and individuals was found in smallholder oil palm plantations-II with 6 species and 16 individuals. In terms of the number of individuals, cave swiftlet (Collocalia linchi) was the largest species with 58 individuals, while cerulean kingfisher (Alcedo coerulescens), pink-necked green pigeon (Treron vernans), and white-headed munia (Lonchura maja) were the species with the fewest individual encounters. (only 1 individual). Based on the literature review, the types of birds found at the research site have four ecological roles. There are insect pest controller, seed dispersers, predator, and weed controller. Further research is needed to examine more deeply the role (quantitative ecology) of each bird species in oil palm agrosystems.

Palm oil is a plantation commodity with economic value in Indonesia. Insects are one of the crucial factors influencing oil palm fruit productivity. The study aimed to identify the insect visitors on male and female palm flowers based on border habitat types and visitation times. The research was conducted in Kalicinta Village, North Kotabumi District, from August 2020 to September 2020. The study was carried out at three observation stations: SS (palm plantations bordering palm plantations), SK (palm plantations bordering rubber plantations), and (palm plantations bordering cassava plantations). Insects were collected using the swap and yellow sticky trap methods. 25 morphospecies and eight insect orders visited oil palm flowers. The result showed that oil palm flowers were visited by 25 morphospecies and eight insect orders. These orders were Coleoptera, Dermaptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Odonata, and Mantodea. Male palm flowers were visited by 25 morphospecies of insects, while female palm flowers were visited by only 5 morphospecies. Elaeidobius sp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was the most common species to visit both male and female flowers, followed by Apis sp. (Hymenoptera: Apidae), and Camponotus sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) respectively. Most insects visit in the morning and the habitat of palm bordering palm is the most visited.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis jacq.), is a vegetable oil-producing plant, which cannot be separated from the attack of caterpillars that eat oil palm leaves which can cause a decrease in plant production. The purpose of this study was to determine the attack rate of bagworm (Metisa plana) and how to control it, on each oil palm plant block at PT. Umada Pernantian "A", Kec. Marbau, North Labuhan Batu Regency. The method used in this research is descriptive method by collecting primary data and secondary data. Primary data is the result of observations in the field with a pest census using a descriptive method. Secondary data is data from the previous pest census in the company. The highest attack rate of Metisa plana was found in block I and block II with an incidence of 18% in block I and 8% in block II, the number of pests in block I was 27,336, and 18,480 in block II, which was >5 tails / midrib with weight category. The lowest Metisa plana attack rate was found in block III and block V where the percentage of bagworm attacks in block III: 0.08% and in block V: 0.11%, the number of pests in block III: 23 tails and block V: 26 tails, with an attack rate of <2 bagworms per midrib. After chemical control was carried out in blocks I and II, the percentage of attacks in block I: 0.43% and block II: 0.34%, the number of pests in block I: 100 and 70 in block II, the attack rate in block I and II were being <2 tails/midrib in the light category
