Surgical Treatment of Primary Hepatic Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma

Abstract: Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a very rare tumor of vascular origin. It can develop in different tissues such as soft tissue, lung, or liver. Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (HEH) mostly affects females. The malignant potential of HEH often remains unclear in the individual patient. It can range from benign hemangioma to malignant hemangioendotheliosarcoma. Here we present our experience with five patients with primary HEH, who were treated with curative intention in our department. All patients … Show more

“…2 Reports of tumor recurrence after liver resection are inconsistent. Whereas one case report has described success with major hepatic resection, 16 aggressive recurrence after resection of apparently localized lesions has also been reported. 2 It has been suggested that hepatotrophic, regenerative cellular signaling after hepatic resection may lead to rapid hyperproliferation of residual malignant disease in some patients.…”

“…Despite no treatment or after OLT with positive lymph nodes or vascular invasion [3,4,[17][18][19], long-term survival has been reported and some cases of spontaneous regression of the lesions have also been reported [3,20]. In contrast, rapid tumor progression has been encountered with subsequent liver failure and death [21]. We were faced with one such patient who was transplanted for acute disease progression responsive to liver failure, but presented massive recurrence of the disease 6 months after transplantation.…”

“…Su etiología es desconocida, diagnosticándose el 60% de los casos en mujeres, en la cuarta década de la vida 1,4,8 . Suele presentarse como lesiones múltiples, bilaterales, de tamaño variable, con características radiológicas superponibles a las metástasis.…”
