Surgical treatment of advanced penile cancer

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate the therapeutic effect of surgery in patients with advanced penile cancer, who have a dismal prognosis.Patients and methodsBetween September 2007 and July 2015, we treated 12 patients with surgical therapy.ResultsThe median follow-up period for all the patients was 16 months (range 4–60 months). “…The low incidence of PC, especially in locally advanced disease, was a limitation in this study, due to the lack of a control group and randomization. The development of a specific and validated questionnaire to assess the quality of life of patients with advanced PC is another concern and is essential for future clinical trials (32). To our knowledge, this study involves the largest sample described in the international literature on PRISD with MPFR as first-line treatment for locally advanced PC, its complications and oncological outcomes.…”

“…16 Zhang et al reported the surgical treatment of advanced penile cancer with resection of the lesion and flap repair. 18 This technique could help improve quality of life but the survival was only 9 months (4-13 months). Multimodality treatment with a combination of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery has been reported with good outcomes in recurrent disease and it is the recommended treatment option for locally advanced disease.…”

“…Toilet penectomy has traditionally been performed for fungating ulcerative primary tumours. Recent retrospective studies show that oncological outcomes remain poor despite radical penectomy and inguinal node dissection [55,56]. One study [56], however, demonstrated that improvement in local symptoms (dysuria and pain) and QoL was achieved in all symptomatic patients after surgery.…”

One study [56], however, demonstrated that improvement in local symptoms (dysuria and pain) and QoL was achieved in all symptomatic patients after surgery.
