“…This fact points to a probable high incidence of surgical site infection considering the data available for this group of hospitals to date (8) . This fact was also highlighted by a study conducted in the interior of São Paulo which identified a monthly average of 5 of these infections for each small hospital (16) . Considering the proportion of small hospitals in the country and then extrapolating these estimates, it can be assumed that a large number of people in Brazil are affected, therefore justifying the need for studies focused on this group of institutions.…”

“…Three studies (LOPES et al, 2018;SABINO et al, 2020;D´OLIVEIRA et al, 2022) were carried out in the ICU sectors. HAI rates ranged from 55.1% (SABINO et al, 2020) to 5.3% (LOPES et al, 2018), excluding the 78.3% rate found in the study by D`Oliveira et al (2022) because it involved critically ill patients with cirrhosis and in the ICU. Due to the distinctions listed in all the studies evaluated at this stage, it is not correct to compare the rates presented in studies with such different approaches.…”

“…Three publications referring to SSI rates were also included (Table 1). Among the selected articles, only one (ARMEDE et al, 2017) was carried out in more than one hospital. However, the study is characterized as regionalized, as it covered three hospitals in the same state.…”

“…A countrywide survey in Brazil found relevant deficits in the overall structure for infection control, including infection control committees, sterilization services, and microbiology laboratory resources 10 . Not surprisingly, high SSI rates occur even in very small hospitals that perform low-complexity surgical procedures 2 …”
