Surgical Resection of Pulmonary Metastasis from Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: BackgroundRenal cell carcinoma has shown less response to systemic therapies including chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy than other cancers. Surgery has therefore become an important treatment tool. The protocol for treatment is the same for pulmonary metastasis of renal cell carcinoma. We performed surgery for pulmonary metastatic renal cell carcinomas and analyzed the results.Materials and MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 15 patients who had undergone pulmonary metastasectomy from renal cell carci… Show more

“…It is important to satisfy the dual goals of complete resection and impacting pulmonary function as little as possible. Lobectomy and pneumonectomy have been safely performed for multiple pulmonary metastasis in cases of other types of primary cancer [22][23][24][25][26][27] . In cases of 2-4 lesions with potential R0 resectability, surgery is reportedly justified in colorectal cancer [28][29][30] .…”

“…Considering the renal cell carcinoma, it was reported that 5-years survival rates are between 21% and 60% after pulmonary metastasectomy [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. It was also shown that metastasectomy would have an additional contribution to prognosis, especially in patients with few and small metastases and longer DFI [5][6][7][8][9].…”
