“…In our study of children with pulmonary malformations, four of 18 (22.2%) patients died during the study period. This finding is only slightly higher than the rate (14.3%) reported in a series of seven children by Speggiorin and colleagues . However, the difference in mortality between groups in our study, occurred despite similar results in terms of dehiscence, restenosis, figure 8‐eight deformity, and the need for tracheostomy.…”

“…In one study (n = 11), Backer et al (2009) reported promising results in terms of mortality (18%) and the avoidance of postoperative tracheostomy; however, they used the slide technique in only three of the 11 patients in their series . Speggiorin and colleagues (2011) published the results of their slide tracheoplasty experience in seven patients with pulmonary agenesis . These authors reported high rates of preoperative ventilation and postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) use, but did not provide comparison to children with normal anatomy or detailed postoperative results.…”

“…It is characterized by the presence of complete cartilaginous rings along more than two-thirds of the length of the trachea. Very few articles have documented this rare and life-threatening association (7,8). On chest radiography, pulmonary agenesis and aplasia appear as diffuse opacity of one hemithorax, mediastinal shift, and contralateral lung hyperinflation.…”

“…Long segment tracheal stenosis occurs mostly in infants and often manifests with severe symptoms. Tracheal stenosis and tracheomalacia in children are difficult to manage; however, a variety of surgical options are available and the final choice depends mostly on the pediatrician's preference and clinical experience [Myer et al 1994;Jaquiss, 2004;Speggiorin et al 2011]. For nearly 40 years, FFB has been used in the clinical investigation of pediatric airway disorders as a minimally invasive technique.…”
