Surgical outcome and complications following cleft lip and palate repair in a teaching hospital in Nigeria

Abstract: The fact that 25.7% of those treated were aged >1 year suggests a continued need to enlighten the public on the availability of cleft lip and palate expertise and treatment. Although an overall good treatment outcome was demonstrated in this study, the nasal score was poorer than the lip score. Complication rate of about 14% following surgical repair is consistent with previous reports in the literature.

“…This can be further underlined by studies indicating higher palatoplasty complication rates in older patients. [16][17][18] In spite of the lack of improvement in speech and nasal regurgitation, the patients, were in general satisfied with the surgery and felt that their self-confidence had improved. Also, despite the unchanged scores of the SHI-based survey, the majority perceived that their speech indeed had improved after the palatoplasty, when asked directly.…”

“…There have been several reports focused on late postoperative wound healing complications; however, late complications require a longer period of evaluation postoperatively161920. Hypertrophic scarring and lip notching are usually studied as late postoperative wound healing complications15. The present study evaluated early postoperative surgical wound complications following cleft lip repair.…”
