Surgical Navigation for Malignancies Guided by Near‐Infrared‐II Fluorescence Imaging

Abstract: Near‐infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging is an emerging noninvasive imaging modality, with unique advantages in guiding tumor resection surgery, thanks to its high sensitivity and instantaneity. In the past decade, studies on the conventional NIR window (NIR‐I, 750–900 nm) have gradually focused on the second NIR window (NIR‐II, 1000–1700 nm). With its reduced light scattering, photon absorption, and auto‐fluorescence qualities, NIR‐II fluorescence imaging significantly improves penetration depths and signal‐t… Show more

“…Very recently, near-infrared zone II (1000-1700nm, NIR Ⅱ) probes and multiphoton probes with deeper penetrating ability have also been developed for RONS imaging of AKI sites. Fluorescent probes in the near-infrared zone II (1000-1700nm, NIR Ⅱ) have lower background interference than the probes in the near-infrared zone I (750-900 nm, NIR I) ( Figure 7 F ) 96 - 98 . Chen et al developed a kidney targeting peptide coupled NIR Ⅱ probe (KTP5-ICG-GNP) to diagnose AKI early with low spontaneous fluorescence background 99 .…”

“…Compared with organic NIR-II fluorescent probes, inorganic NIR-II fluorescent probes, including QDs, SWCNTs, and rare-earth-doped nanoparticles (RENPs) have excellent quantum yield and high stability [ 40 , 41 ]. Among the multiple NIR-II fluorescent probes reported thus far, QDs have attracted much attention due to their excellent fluorescence quantum yield [ 42 ].…”

“…Practically, some NIR fluorescent dyes, such as indocyanine green (ICG) and methylene blue, have been approved by Food and Drug Administration for clinic use, indicating great clinical value of NIR fluorescence imaging. 17 , 18 In some of the latest studies, a variety of NIR dyes after specific modifications could bring signals to specific lesion areas such as various tumours from different origins, 19 , 20 and specific tissues, 16 to guide the operators for further medical actions. Therefore, by combining these two imaging techniques, MRI and optical imaging, we can obtain both accurate preoperative diagnostic information and intraoperative pathological information to provide guidance for a more precise surgical resection of tumours.…”
