Surge Definitions for Radial Compressors in Automotive Turbochargers

Abstract: A standardized measurement setup and definition of compressor surge is yet to be established in the automotive community. As a consequence, compressor comparisons with regards to compressor operating map width is practically impossible today. This paper presents a possible solution to the described problem by presenting a suitable instrumentation and a correlation between measured values and actual NVH limits normally encountered in turbocharged vehicle applications. The work has been performed in laboratory c… Show more

“…Examples of surge detection on turbocharger compressors by RMS can be found in e.g. the PhD theses by Guillou [1] and Gancedo [2], and in the works by Andersen et al [3]. The linear frequency spectrum obtained by discrete Fourier transform is applied in by Galindo et al [4], Marelli et al [5], and again Andersen et al [3].…”

“…The test rig is further described in Andersen et al (2008), and some of the data is presented in Table 2. Γ Πcs is found to be ≈ 50% for a wide range ofN for this compressor.…”

“…Experimental data is collected from three different platforms: a compressor driven by a separate electric motor in a surge test stand (Andersen et al, 2008), a compressor as part of a single stage turbocharger installed in a test stand, and a two stage turbocharged engine mounted in an engine test stand.…”
