Surface Texture Evaluation of Micro-WEDM

Abstract: Micro wire electrical discharge machining (Micro-WEDM) is one key micro-processing technology for intricate micro parts. The surface texture is different with a single mechanical cutting surface and conventional spark-erosion formation machined surface. Assessment of the existing surface texture roughness parameters in terms of accuracy, or in the characterization of fine sense, can not meet the Micro-WEDM surface texture characterization needs. Through the analyses of surface autocorrelation function, structu… Show more

“…WEDM (wire-cut electrical discharge machining) with its features of non-contact, high cost performance, suitable for single-part or small-lot production, has a unique advantage in the 2D contour processing. Although some scholars [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] had done a lot of research work in this aspect, more perfect processing methods are lacked on metal components with micro/meso scale, and the defects, such as the distortion of cantilever and the bend of sharp corners, are prone to appear.…”

“…In cross-scale machining, many processing methods are difficult to reflect more cost efficient, so research on the micro-machining technology which is suitable for metal components with micro/meso scale and has the advantages of being economic, practical and efficient has been deserved more and more attention.WEDM (wire-cut electrical discharge machining) with its features of non-contact, high cost performance, suitable for single-part or small-lot production, has a unique advantage in the 2D contour processing. The method of processing stability for micro/meso scale structure are studied through the development and adjustment of machining parameters, The solution to problems of the defects, such as the cantilever distortion and sharp corners bending etc., are explored.…”

“…Most machining process surfaces are random at some extent, so we need analyze them based on statistics [1]. Statistical parameters of surface roughness mostly refer to parameters concerned with cumulated distribution of surface height, including amplitude parameters and functional parameters.…”

“…The Micro Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (MWEDM) surface is an isotropy surface which is composed of innumerable ellipsoid profile peaks and pits distributed at random [1,2]. Characterized by 3D roughness, shape and distributing characters of surface structure can bring direct influence on calculating precision and calculating method of characters such as slope, curvature and isotropy, etc..…”
