Objective: To evaluate whether the debonding procedure leads to restitutio ad integrum of the enamel surface by investigating the presence of enamel within the bracket base remnants after debonding. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients who completed orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances were included. A total of 1068 brackets were microphotographed; the brackets presenting some remnants on the base (n 5 818) were selected and analyzed with ImageJ software to measure the remnant area. From this population a statistically significant sample (n 5 100) was observed under a scanning electron microscope to check for the presence of enamel within the remnants. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry was also performed to obtain quantitative data. Results: Statistically significant differences in the remnant percentage between arches were observed for incisor and canine brackets (P , .0001 and P 5 .022, respectively). From a morphologic analysis of the scanning electron micrographs the bracket bases were categorized in 3 groups: group A, bases presenting a thin enamel coat (83%); group B, bases showing sizable enamel fragments (7%); group C, bases with no morphologic evidence of enamel presence (10%). Calcium presence was noted on all evaluated brackets under energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. No significant difference was observed in the Ca/Si ratio between group A (16.21%) and group B (18.77%), whereas the Ca/Si ratio in group C (5.40%) was significantly lower than that of the other groups (P , .323 and P 5 .0001, respectively). Conclusion: The objective of an atraumatic debonding is not achieved yet; in some cases the damage could be clinically relevant. (Angle Orthod. 2013;83:885-891.)

Background The objectives of this study were to explore traditional resin removal procedures in the debonding process and evaluate the Er:YAG laser as a plausible option. Methods Sixty premolar teeth were bonded with brackets. Then, brackets were removed and five adhesive clean-up methods were tested against control teeth: (a) Er:YAG laser at 200 mJ and 20 Hz; (b) Er:YAG laser at 305 mJ and 10 Hz; (c) 20-fluted flame-shaped tungsten carbide bur at high-speed; (d) #8-fluted round tungsten carbide bur at low-speed; and (e) #5 round end tapered fine diamond bur at high speed. Quantitative measurements including average (Avg) profile height, total indicator run-out (TIR), arithmetic average roughness (R a ), and time were made using profilometry. Qualitative evaluation of tooth surfaces was done using SEM. Results The two laser settings produced a statistically higher TIR, R a , and time compared to the controls (P < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between the three bur techniques in regards to surface texture or time. Qualitatively, the 20-fluted carbide bur left the smoothest surface. Conclusion The Er:YAG laser at the tested settings would not be appropriate for adhesive removal. The interaction of the Er:YAG wavelength under these conditions was not comparable to the 20-fluted flame-shaped tungsten carbide bur at high speed for orthodontic adhesive removal leaving a smoother enamel surface.

El objetivo fue evaluar las alteraciones del color dental con tres bebidas oscuras, en dientes tratados con ortodoncia fija. Métodos: estudio experimental in-vitro, con 48 premolares humanos, aleatorizados en tres grupos de 16 dientes. Después de la cementación y descementación de brackets, los dientes fueron sumergidos durante 10 días a 37°C, en Coca-cola ® , vino tinto y café. El color fue medido antes de la cementación de brackets (T1) y después de la exposición a las sustancias (T2), con un espectrofotómetro (Vita Easyshade ® ). La diferencia en color (ΔΕ) fue calculada entre T1 y T2. Se aplicó la prueba t pareada y Bonferroni para determinar el significado de las diferencias en los parámetros L, C, h (p < 0,05). Resultados: se encontró una diferencia significativa en L, C, h (p = 0,05); los cambios de color fueron significativos: entre 79,8 (Coca-cola ® ) y 7,5 (café) unidades ΔΕ. After cementing and then de-cementing braces, the teeth were submerged in Coca-Cola ® , red wine and coffee for 10 days at 37°C. Color was measured before cementing braces (T1) and after exposure to the substances (T2) with a spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade ® ), to calculate the difference in color (Δe) between T1 and T2.
