Surface Reconstruction and Decahedral Structure of Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Abstract: We report on energetic surface reconstruction phenomena observed on bimetallic nanoparticle systems of AuPd and AuCu, similar to a resolidification effect observed during the cooling process in lead clusters. These binary alloy nanoparticles show the fivefold edges truncated, resulting in [100] facets on decahedral structures, an effect largely envisioned and reported theoretically, with no experimental evidence so far. We demonstrate experimentally as well as by computational simulations that this new eutecti… Show more

“…5 shows the high resolution TEM images (HRTEM) of the Ag particles. This type of particles has been analyzed in our laboratory, and it corresponds to the icosahedral and decahedral shaped particles [13,14]. Observe also, in these images, the gray contrast that surrounds the particles.…”

“…In previous works [13,14,16] it has been observed that the geometry and size of the silver phase inside the Ag-C NP particles rest intact. Indeed, Ag nanoparticles presented a polyhedral shape inside the matrix, mainly icosahedral and decahedral.…”

“…[69] The Ag seeds were first formed by heating an aqueous solution of AgNO 3 with NaBH 4 and a trisodium citrate stabilizer under reflux. These seeds (approximately 9.6 nm in diameter) were then further heated under reflux in a 1:1 ratio with HAuCl 4 and additional stabiliser to form monodisperse core-shells that were less than 9 nm in diameter.…”

“…7 The shell periodicity imposes certain restrictions on the symmetry of the clusters following Plato's five geometric bodies. [8][9][10] Excellent examples of such shell structures are Mackay icosahedra, 11 which are composed of 20 twin-related tetrahedra packed along (111) faces. Elastic deformation of the individual tetraheda is required, if merged into icosahedra, which is why one expects that such particles be compressed.…”
