Surface plasmon resonance imaging for ABH antigen detection on red blood cells and in saliva: secretor status-related ABO subgroup identification

Abstract: Low antigenic expression of ABO subgroup system on red blood cell (RBC) is cause of discrepancy between forward and reverse blood typing in the standard agglutination technique. Neutralization agglutination is employed for verification of the detection of ABH substances in saliva. However, the neutralization technique is complicated, time-consuming and requires expertise. To overcome these drawbacks, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging was developed for ABH antigen detection on RBCs and in saliva. An antib… Show more

“…Orthopantomography or panoramic radiographs are the panoramic X-ray scanning of the upper and lower jaws that provide a broad radiologic graph from the human dentition. Because of the low radiation dose and short time required for imaging, dental panoramic radiography [ 70 ] has become a broadly applied standard method in dentistry as complementary information and initial examinations for oncological treatments [ 71 – 73 ]. Accordingly, orthopantomography is now practically used for victim identification in several MDs including war casualties [ 74 ].…”

“…No other antifouling strategy besides a pretreatment of saliva samples that included freezing and boiling was carried out to inactivate salivary enzymes and prevent their adsorption. Another singular approach involving the same carboxymethyldextran-modified surface but making use of an SPR imaging biosensor was applied to detect ABH antigens from red blood cell (RBC) membranes in saliva [94]. The aim of the study was to prevent misinterpretation of blood group typing by diminishing the time of conventional agglutination assays based on standard neutralization testing.…”
