Surface modification of UHMWPE fibers by means of polyethylene wax grafted maleic anhydride treatment

Abstract: A novel surface modification method for ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers to improve the adhesion with epoxy matrix was demonstrated. Polyethylene wax grafted maleic anhydride (PEW‐g‐MAH) was deposited on the UHMWPE fibers surface by coating method. The changes of surface chemical composition, crystalline structure, mechanical properties of fiber and composite, wettability, surface topography of fibers and adhesion between fiber and epoxy resin before and after finishing were studied, res… Show more

“…However, UHMWPE also presents some defects such as low surface hardness, poor abrasive wear resistance, low elastic modulus and bending strength, and poor creep resistance . In order to promote the application of UHMWPE under industrial friction conditions, some modifications need to be implemented to improve its mechanical and tribological performance …”

“…39 Another new absorption peak at 1645 cm À1 is attributed to the C=C stretching vibration of indole. 38 The above results indicate that selfpolymerization of dopamine took place on UHMWPE fiber. In Figure 2c, three new absorption peaks are appeared at 1199, 1101, and 1034 cm À1 , which are identified as the Si-CH 2 -R stretch vibration, Si-O-Si stretch vibration and Si-O-C stretch vibration, 35 respectively, and mutually confirmed by the XPS analysis.…”

“…where F max is the max pull-out stress, N is the number of fibers, D is the UHMWPE fiber diameter, and L is the embedded length. 38 The flexural strength test was taken by a universal testing machine (CMT 5254, Shenzhen SANS Testing Machine Co., Ltd, Shenzhen, China) according to ISO 14125. The size of samples was 80 mm  15 mm  4 mm.…”

“…Flexural strength was a significant index to investigate the interface properties of composites. According to the standard of ISO 14125, a universal testing machine was used to test flexural strength with the rate of 2 mm/min, 34 and the size of samples were 80 mm  15 mm  4 mm. Impact strength was the most intuitive manifestation of the bonding performance of composites, which was measured by an Izod impact testing machine PIT501J according to the standard of ASTM D 3029-FA, 24 and the size of sample was 80 mm  10 mm  4 mm.…”
