Surface Modification of Cured Inorganic Foams with Cationic Cellulose Nanocrystals and Their Use as Reactive Filter Media for Anionic Dye Removal

Abstract: In this work, a surface cationized inorganic–organic hybrid foam was produced from porous geopolymer (GP) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). GPs were synthesized from alkali-activated metakaolin using H 2 O 2 as a blowing agent and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant. These highly porous GPs were combined at pH 7.5 with cationic CNCs that had been synthesized from dissolving pulp through periodate oxidation followed by cationization in a deep … Show more

“…The oxygen tetrahedra containing the Al 3+ ions has a negative charge, which is balanced by cations such as Na + [38], and this explains the negative zeta potential. The results shown in Figure 2 are in line with previous studies on the topic [39,40].…”

“…In contrast, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) 193 are positively charged over a wide pH range, e.g., 3−8, and are, therefore, more attractive for cationic functionalization. QACs reported in the literature for functionalization of nanocellulose include Girard's reagent T ((2-hydrazinyl-2-oxoethyl)trimethylazanium chloride), 194,195 epoxy-propyltrimethylammonium chloride (EPTMAC), 196,197 glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride, 186,189,190,198 imidazolium, 199 aminoguanidine, 200,201 pyridinium, 202 and a deep eutectic solvents made from aminoguanidine hydrochloride and glycerol 203 or boric acid and glycidyl trimethylammonium chloride. 204 In water treatment applications, cationic nanocellulose is attractive because it offers ease of adsorbent recovery after adsorption.…”

“…Recently, DESs have also been studied for pretreatment and modification of cellulose (Sirviö et al 2015;Li et al 2017;Selkälä et al 2020). Sirviö et al (2015) used DES of choline chloride-urea (molar ratio of 1:2) to promote nanofibrillation of birch pulp.…”
