Surface-Initiated Anionic Polymerization from Nanomaterials

Abstract: Surface-initiated anionic polymerization is one of the many techniques used for the modification of organic and inorganic nanomaterials. Surface modification of nanomaterials using polymers is a unique way to reduce interface incompatibility of nanomaterials for applications in new technologies. The properties of nanomaterials strongly depend on their compatibility with organic phases either in bulk or in solution. This chapter focuses on surface grafting of polymers using living anionic polymerization from va… Show more

“…SI-anionic and cationic polymerizations are excellent routes in providing polymer grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) with predetermined molecular weights of narrow dispersity [ 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 ]. However, the complexity of the experimental techniques limits their broad use [ 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 ]. Alternatively, initiator immobilized NPs have been subjected to free radical polymerization to yield graft NPs [ 68 , 69 ].…”

“…3−5 The modification of surfaces with polymer brush films provides myriad opportunities to engineer the surface properties and functionality of materials. 6−8 The scope of surface-initiated polymerization chemistries is very diverse and includes most of the commonly used controlled radical polymerization methods 9,10 as well as anionic, 11,12 cationic, 11,13−15 and ringopening polymerization. 16−22 Together, these techniques provide access to polymer brushes from a vast range of monomer building blocks.…”

“…Controlled/living polymerization reactions are powerful methods, not only for the solution synthesis of polymers with well-defined molecular characteristics but also to graft polymers from surfaces. , Surface-initiated polymerizations generate densely packed, chain-end-tethered polymer films that are commonly referred to as polymer brushes. The modification of surfaces with polymer brush films provides myriad opportunities to engineer the surface properties and functionality of materials. The scope of surface-initiated polymerization chemistries is very diverse and includes most of the commonly used controlled radical polymerization methods , as well as anionic, , cationic, , and ring-opening polymerization. Together, these techniques provide access to polymer brushes from a vast range of monomer building blocks.…”
