Surface elevation changes on Lachman Crags ice caps (north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula) since 1979 indicated by DEMs and ICESat data

Abstract: The long-term warming on the Antarctic Peninsula in the second half of the 20th century prompted rapid retreat of glaciers on the peninsula and surrounding islands. Retreat accelerated until the beginning of the new millennium when the regional warming trend significantly decreased. The response of glaciers to the change in temperature trend has been observed around the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula but the timing of the shift from the surface lowering to mass gain remains unclear. Using historical … Show more

“…The error in thickness retrieved from the GPR measurement was evaluated using a conservative estimate of vertical resolution (a half of the signal's wavelength in ice, i.e. 1.68 m for the 50 MHz antenna) and a relative error in radio-wave velocity of 2.4%, which corresponds to a range of velocity values from 166 to 170 m μs –1 (Engel and others, 2019). We chose this narrow range since we anticipated only minor variations in density and water/air content in glacier ice.…”

“…The local landscape is dominated by volcanic mesas with steep slopes reaching up to 641 m a.s.l. [40,42] and the tower-like Lookalike Peaks (767 m a.s.l.) above the southern part of the Whisky Glacier (Figure 1c).…”

“…In this study area, several automatic weather stations (AWS) have been installed as part of the Czech Antarctic Research Programme within the last 10 years. The AWS are located in the complex terrain of northern James Ross Island, which is characterized by low-lying coastal areas with vegetation on only a small proportion of the surfaces, hills and mesas several hundred meters high and small glaciers [39,40].…”
