The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of prior microabrasion on the teeth color change and tooth bleaching effectiveness. Eight sound molars were mesiodistally sectioned and the halves were randomly allocated to receive enamel microabrasion or non-abrasion (control) in one of surfaces (buccal or lingual), while the remaining surface received the other treatment. The tooth color on baseline was evaluated by spectrophotometer (CieL*a*b system). After the microabrasion procedure, the tooth color was measured again. Following, the specimens were bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide for two sessions with one-week interval. The color was re-evaluated 7 days after each section and 30 days after the second session. The effect of enamel microabrasion on color changes was evaluated by paired T-test. Deltas L*, a*, b*, and E were calculated and data submitted to 2-way repeated measure ANOVA followed by Tukey`s test. Paired T-test was also used to assess possible differences on the ultimate color achieved after tooth bleaching. Enamel microabrasion reduced the lightness and increased the redness of specimens. Specimens that received microabrasion presented higher values of ∆L* than control after each bleaching procedure; and higher ∆a* after the 2 nd bleaching session. However, the prior enamel microabrasion did not affect the ultimate values of color parameters. Despite enamel microabrasion have modified the tooth color, this procedure did not affect the ultimate results achieved with tooth bleaching using a high-concentrated hydrogen peroxide.

IntroduçãoAtualmente, existem diversas alternativas para o restabelecimento de um sorriso estético e harmôni-co, sendo os procedimentos rápidos e, minimamente, invasivos os que mais despertam interesse entre os indivíduos que buscam resultados imediatos. Nesse contexto, um dos tratamentos odontológicos estéticos mais requisitados e efetivo é o clareamento dental [1][2] . O efeito clareador pode ser conseguido pelo paciente em consultório odontológico, em casa sob supervisão profissional ou por meio de produtos de autoaplicação (over-the-counter), método que vem se tornando cada vez mais popular. O fácil acesso dos pacientes aos inúmeros produtos clareadores disponíveis no mercado e o seu baixo custo justificam a popularidade deste procedimento [3][4] . O principal agente clareador para qualquer tipo de método é o peróxido de hidrogênio (H 2 O 2 ) que a depender da técnica terá sua concentração e tempo de atuação utilizados de forma diferenciada [5][6] . A efetividade desse produto ocorre pelo seu baixo peso molecular que favorece sua difusão rápida entre os tecidos mineralizados. Sua atuação se dá pela liberação de radicais livres, como moléculas de oxigê-nio reativo e ânions de peróxido de hidrogênio que quebram as moléculas cromogênicas da dentina em estruturas menores. Assim, não havendo cromófo-ros de cadeias longas, a reflexão de luz é acentuada dando ao dente um aspecto mais claro [7][8] . Conditions of the acrylic resin (AR) surface, such as roughness, can promote a favourable environment for the adhesion of micro‐organisms, even on the surface of ocular prostheses. This study evaluated the influence of photopolymerized glaze application on the roughness of ARs and adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis on ocular AR surfaces submitted to accelerated ageing. Two hundred and eighty‐eight samples of white colour (N1) and colourless ARs were distributed in eight groups (n = 9), based on surface treatments (glaze or ARs submitted to only a final polishing), accelerated ageing (before and after) and periods of microbial growth (24‐ and 48‐h). The roughness average (Ra) and total height of roughness profile (Rt) values were greater for the groups with glaze and increased for all groups after ageing. The microbial adhesion among the groups with and without glaze did not present a statistically significant difference. The ageing did not statistically affect the adhesion of Staph. epidermidis, but affected the adhesion of Staph. aureus, which presented an increase after 24 h of growth on only N1 AR with glaze. These results demonstrate that the glaze did not contribute to adhesion of Staph. aureus and Staph. epidermidis, which are responsible for most ocular prosthetic infections. Significance and Impact of the Study Some recent evidence suggested that the surface finish of ocular prostheses influences the accumulation of deposits that can affect the interaction with pathogenic bacteria, increasing the probability of infections. In addition, surface deterioration over time can increase the roughness and, consequently, biofilm formation. Thus, a better understanding of the influence of surface finish on bacterial adhesion becomes extremely important. In this study, we tested a glaze for surface polishing compared to mechanical polishing, before and after ageing. The results suggest that the glaze did not contribute to microbial adhesion and might be useful in preventing possible prosthetic infections.
