Suprabasin—A Review

Abstract: Among the ~22,000 human genes, very few remain that have unknown functions. One such example is suprabasin (SBSN). Originally described as a component of the cornified envelope, the function of stratified epithelia-expressed SBSN is unknown. Both the lack of knowledge about the gene role under physiological conditions and the emerging link of SBSN to various human diseases, including cancer, attract research interest. The association of SBSN expression with poor prognosis of patients suffering from oesophageal… Show more

“…This study combined ProteoMiner, 2D-DIGE, and mass spectrometry to identify 24 proteins with different abundances that could act as candidate biomarkers, among which SBSN was chosen for further evaluation due to its potential role as an oncoprotein [14]. The quantification of the two isoforms of SBSN in serum and tissue was performed by Western blotting.…”

“…Suprabasin (SBSN) is an oncogene and biomarker in several cancers such as lung carcinoma, salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma, and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The physiological role of SBSN is still unknown [14]. The human SBSN gene is localised in chromosome 19 and consists of five exons and four introns, while mRNA produces three isoforms by alternative splicing [15].…”

“…49 It is basically considered as an oncogene, which can be used as a biomarker in several diseases such as cancer. 50 Suprabasin is known as a tumor endothelial cell marker and may play a role in tumor invasion/metastasis and angiogenesis. 51,52 Furthermore, the over-expression of suprabasin has been associated with the proliferation and tumorigenicity of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.…”

“…Dear Editor, Suprabasin (SBSN) is a differentiation-associated protein of epidermis. 1 SBSN is strongly expressed in the upper layers of stratified squamous epithelium in various organs including the skin and upper digestive tract.…”
