Suppression of Brake Squeal Using Shunted Piezoceramics

Abstract: Due to increased interest in comfort features, considerable effort is spent by brake manufacturers in order to suppress brake squeal. This process can be shortened by eliminating the remaining squealing with shunted piezoceramics that are embedded into the brake system. The piezoceramics offers the unique ability to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. The damping performance is determined by the connected shunt. This paper presents a multibody system model of a brake, which is capa… Show more

“…The piezo element, placed in the mechanical system, generates the force due to its external dimensional changes, as a result of the mechanical to electrical and electrical to mechanical energy conversion phenomena. One of the possible application is the brake system, where the piezo elements are used for suppression of the brake squeal [18]. Many mechatronical applications use the piezo elements as the actors or sensors, and make use of their properties, separately.…”

“…This model has been introduced in [13] the efficiency of linear LR and LRC shunts as well as a feedback control for brake squeal suppression. The two brake pads are modelled as rigid bodies and the contact area is represented as a layer with distributed stiffness and damping properties.…”

“…This increases the total degrees of freedom (DOF) of the system by one, but with the outcome of constant system matrices. An LRCshunted transducer placed between DOFs x i and x j of a multibody is incorporated into the system matrices of the overall system by adding the following submatrices according to reference [3] 0 0 0 …”

“…While this approach shows a very good performance, the requirement of complex sensing devices and amplifiers makes this technique expensive. An alternative approach is piezoelectric shunt damping [3]. This technique has been a very active area of research over the past two decades [4,5].…”
