Supporting farmers’ management of change towards agroecological practices by focusing on their work: a contribution of ergonomics

Abstract: -The public authorities and some agricultural actors wish to develop agroecology to meet the rise of new challenges (impacts of agricultural practices on natural resources in particular). New agricultural work systems are therefore being designed, and are raising questions about the inclusion of farmers' work in the agroecological transition. Our research-action endeavours to support the development of farmers' change management. To do so, we implement a reflective tool: the "chronicle of change", which appear… Show more

“…It would be worth investigating this point. Chizallet et al (2016) challenge the forms of support provided in this flow of activity in order to enable farmers to be more reflexive and projective about work issues, and call for research on the forms and content of support that will enable farmers to acquire and express their capacities. How does this integration of constructive work into farmers' flow of activities challenge and change AKIS players' profession?…”

“…Deep investigation into major drivers would help understand dynamics of work-related changes and how research could better support sustainable working conditions in agriculture. We need to deepen research on how agricultural models in territories have impacted work-related changes and agricultural dynamics over the past 10 years (Purseigle et al 2017) by encouraging certain ones, such as agroecology on small-scale farms (Altieri 1999;Chizallet et al 2018;Parodi 2018;Finley et al 2018) and industrial agriculture on large-scale farms (Zlolniski 2018;Palliere and Cochet 2018;Suzuki et al 2018), or by discouraging others, such as communitarian agriculture (Zhang and Donaldson 2010).…”

“…Several studies adopting this co-evolutionary approach enable us to understand how these lock-ins are constructed in the agricultural sector (Cowan and Gunby 1996;Vanloqueren and Baret 2009). For example, the work of Magrini et al (2016;2018) shows how the political drive following the Second World War, based on the Agroecological Transition from Farms to Territorialised Agri-Food Systems: Issues… conventional paradigm, 3 discouraged the development of production alternatives with less use of mineral fertilisers, such as pulses farming. Instead, the specialisation of production by country (European cereals versus American soy), region, and farm, supported by the use of synthetic inputs and specific genetic changes, were promoted.…”

“…Five main types of mechanism (called "self-reinforcing") feed this adoption practice and highlight the role of collective action and knowledge. These mechanisms are illustrated for the conventional agricultural paradigm in (Magrini et al 2017;2018). We give a brief overview of them below:…”
