Characteristics of “work in agriculture” scientific communities. A bibliometric review

Abstract: Work is a central concern for sustainable farming systems and rural communities, especially regarding specific issues of the agricultural sector, as the strong decrease in rural employment and the less attractive working conditions. Many articles covering diverse related topics have been published. However, the few studies analyzing the state of worldwide scientific research on work in agriculture give only a fragmented view, since they focus on specialized topics and disciplines. To fill this knowledge gap, t… Show more

“…With respect to the international collaboration in carrying out the studies, the group of 29 countries shows an average percentage of 36.7% of the total articles published. This percentage is lower compared to other related subjects [11,[76][77][78][79]. Although a total of 16 countries are above this average, only eight reach at least 50% (UK, Germany, France, Mexico, Thailand, Australia, Israel, Malaysia).…”

“…Given the limited number of relevant papers, it is unsurprising that we could not observe geographical differences. The high number of papers from France might be explained by the relative importance of the scientific community within French national research institutes for agriculture, food, and environment working in the field of farm work, as identified by Malanski et al (2019). The only topic that this scientific community is not studying is that of "occupational health" (Malanski et al 2019).…”

“…In contrast with the abundant literature available on workers' health in agriculture (Malanski et al 2019), only one paper related to the health dimension in agroecological livestock systems was obtained from the query. It studied the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria among broilers and humans living around and/or working on organic broiler farms.…”

“…Labour represents a good proxy of economic and social issues. Agricultural economists focus on labour efficiency and rural sociologists on division of labour by gender, but such issues are generally not addressed by environmental scientists performing sustainability analyses (Malanski et al 2019). Environment-oriented tools currently lack indicators that reveal the social perspective on sustainability, as pointed for LCA by van der Werf et al ( 2020) regarding land degradation, pesticide issues and biodiversity losses.…”
