Support to oil spill emergencies in the Bonifacio Strait, western Mediterranean

Abstract: Abstract. An innovative forecasting system of the coastal marine circulation has been implemented in the Bonifacio Strait area, between Corsica and Sardinia, using a numerical approach to facilitate the rapid planning and coordination of remedial actions for oil spill emergencies at sea by local authorities. Downscaling and nesting techniques from regional to coastal scale and a 3-D hydrodynamic numerical model, coupled with a wind wave model, are the core of the integrated Bonifacio Strait system. Such a syst… Show more

“…A spin-up time of 3 days appears to be a reasonable choice to ensure the development of internal dynamics by the nested model. This choice was adopted also by other authors implementing high-resolution models in re-initialized mode both on large and coastal scale (Rolinski and Umgiesser, 2005;Cucco et al, 2012;Trotta et al, 2016) and also on the harbour scale (Gaeta et al, 2016, in this issue). We conclude that a spin-up period of 3 days combined with active tracers and hydrodynamic initialization is the optimal choice for SANIFS initialization.…”

“…14b) the large-scale anticyclonic gyre (G1) in the Gulf of Taranto became more intense (velocity peak of 0.2 m s −1 ) and more extended, also covering the shelfcoastal areas and causing the three cyclonic vortices to vanish. The Gulf of Taranto circulation structure seems to affect the WACC (Artegiani et al, 1997a, b;Cushman-Roisin et al, 2001) entrance in the gulf and along the Apulia coasts: in the case of a weaker G1, the WACC is reversed and it restarts when the G1 is stronger, isolating the Gulf of Taranto circulation from the rest of the domain. Figure 15 describes the daily mean surface and bottom circulation in Mar Grande for the 5 October (CHS survey).…”

“…The numerical system developed for the project "SOS-Piattaforme e Impatti Offshore" is based on what was experienced in past projects like Development of TEcnologies for Situational Sea Awareness (TESSA) [19,20], Mediterranean Decision Support System per la Marine Safety (MEDESS-4MS) [8] and SOS-Bonifacio [1,2,15]. It is composed by nested hydrodynamic numerical models at different spatial scales, from the regional to the coastal, through a methodology known as downscaling [21][22][23].…”

“…The success of oil spill mitigation actions is closely dependent on the time necessary to detect the slick and predict its fate (i.e., slick displacement and dispersion), in order to permit governmental response agencies in planning and providing a specific and timely intervention at sea. The oil slick detection can be done in situ or by satellite, while its forecast is usually performed through more or less complex systems of numerical simulation with the application of empirical and semi-empirical algorithms, or the estimate of a surface water masses path starting from the intensity of winds [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The most advanced systems currently used incorporate both the weather-marine physical forcing and a Lagrangian module that reproduces trajectories, diffusion, and transformation processes of the oil slicks [7,8].…”
