Supply chain slack and sustainable development performance: The “fit–adjust” effect of objective and perceived environmental uncertainties

Abstract: Slack has been argued to have “double‐edged sword” effects; hence, whether it contributes to sustainable development remains questionable. This study examines the relationship between supply chain slack and sustainable development performance based on information processing theory. “…We measure corporate environmental performance according to environmental rewards or penalties it has received, by whether the corporate is certified to ISO14001 and the number of environmental violations, respectively. ISO14001, environmental management system certification, can reflect a corporate's compliance with the environmental management system and its level of environmental management, indicating that the corporate's control of pollutant emissions in production activities meets the relevant requirements (Chen et al, 2022; Daddi et al, 2021). Testa et al (2014) find that Italian energy‐intensive corporations were responsive to the international ISO14001 standard, with a reduction in corporate CO 2 emissions and a significant improvement in both short‐ and long‐term environmental performance.…”
