Supply chain operations for a circular economy

Abstract: This editorial piece introduces the aim and content of the special issue on Supply Chain Operations for a Circular Economy. We initially provide an overview of the special issue themes and related inter-disciplinary topics. A summary of the accepted papers is presented in terms of the specific topics they address and their main contributions to the domain of supply chain operations. “…Waste management is strategic for keeping resources circulating. The purpose of circularity of resources is to incorporate the perspectives of industrial symbiosis, service ecosystems, resource-based productivity, and functional alignment to help to ensure that societies will function sustainably (Chertow, 2007;Seuring and Muller, 2008;Sarkar, 2013;Batista et al, 2018). In line with CE objectives, improved waste management is primarily focused upon exploring the avenues to control or to decrease waste generation; it also has waste recycling, waste reclamation foci (Park et al, 2010;Jacobsen et al, 2018).…”

“…CE is now widely recognized as a sustainable alternative to the dominant liner (extract-make-dispose) economic model. A transition to CE requires a paradigm shift to an innovative and more sustainable supply chain ecosystem (Zanella et al, 2014;Farooque and Zhang, 2017;Batista et al, 2018).…”

“…The authors indicate studies related to ecological economy, general systems theory, industrial ecology, regenerative design, performance economy, cradle to cradle, biomimicry and, blue economy, as antecedents of the concept of circular economy. A growing body of literature on the circular economy, however, indicates that the terminology 'circular economy' is being increasingly adopted by academics and practitioners as an umbrella term that embraces major antecedent sustainability-based disciplines, approaches and schools of thought applied in production and consumption systems (Batista et al, 2018b;De Angelis, Howard, and Miemczyk, 2018).…”

“…In addition, it can be a costly and risky endeavour to switch an operational linear business model to a functioning CE (Ellen MacArthur Foundation 2015). According to literature CE is an attractive viable alternative to business as it can lead to better management of resource risk and value creation (Batista, et al, 2018). CE is an economy designed to preserve and enhance natural capital and optimise resource yield by managing finite stocks and renewable flows (Yang, et al, 2018).…”
