“…Salmonella is comprised of two species, Salmonella bongori and Salmonella enterica (Guibourdenche et al, 2010). Based on the bacterial outer membrane surface 'O' antigen, and flagellar 'H' antigen more than 2,700 different serovars of Salmonella has been characterized (Collazo and Galan 1997).…”

“…Salmonella is a diverse group of pathogens that have evolved to survive in a wide range of environments and hosts [31]. There are more than 2600 serovars [32] and the majority (over 1500) of them belong to Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica, which encompasses most of the serovars that are of greatest clinical relevance.…”

“…Most of Salmonella isolates from human infections belong to S. enterica subspecies enterica. This genus is further divided into over 2600 Salmonella serovars (serotypes) based on the O (somatic), H (flagellar) and Vi antigens [1,2]. The most common serovars that cause human infections are S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis [3,4].…”
