We analyze the perturbative massive open string spectrum of even-dimensional superstring compactifications with four, eight and sixteen supercharges. In each of such cases, we focus on universal states that exist independently on the internal geometry and other compatification details. We analytically compute refined partition functions that count these states at each mass level. Such refined partition functions are written in a super-Poincaré covariant form, providing information on how supermultiplets transform under the little group and the R symmetry. Various asymptotic limits of the partition functions and their associated quantities, such as the leading and subleading Regge trajectories, are studied empirically and analytically. In the phenomenologically relevant case of four supercharges, the partition function can be cast into the most compact form and the asymptotic formula in the large spin limit is derived explicitly. We present a simple superfield Lagrangian for massive supergravity. It comprises the minimal supergravity Lagrangian with interactions as well as mass terms for the metric superfield and the chiral compensator. This is the natural generalization of the Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian for massive gravity which comprises mass terms for the metric and its trace. We show that the on-shell bosonic and fermionic fields are degenerate and have the appropriate spins: 2, 3/2, 3/2 and 1. We then study this interacting Lagrangian using goldstone superfields. We find that a chiral multiplet of goldstones gets a kinetic term through mixing, just as the scalar goldstone does in the non-supersymmetric case. This produces Planck scale (M Pl ) interactions with matter and all the discontinuities and unitarity bounds associated with massive gravity. In particular, the scale of strong coupling is (M Pl m 4 ) 1/5 , where m is the multiplet's mass. Next, we consider applications of massive supergravity to deconstruction. We estimate various quantum effects which generate non-local operators in theory space. As an example, we show that the single massive supergravity multiplet in a 2-site model can serve the function of an extra dimension in anomaly mediation.

In three dimensions, it is known that field theories possessing extended (p, q) anti-de Sitter (AdS) supersymmetry with N = p + q ≥ 3 can be realised in (2,0) AdS superspace. Here we present a formalism to reduce every field theory with (2,0) AdS supersymmetry to N = 1 AdS superspace. As nontrivial examples, we consider supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models formulated in terms of N = 2 chiral and linear supermultiplets. The (2, 0) → (1, 0) AdS reduction technique is then applied to the off-shell massless higher-spin supermultiplets in (2,0) AdS superspace constructed in [1]. As a result, for each superspin valueŝ, integer (ŝ = s) or half-integer (ŝ = s + 1 2 ), with s = 1, 2, . . . , we obtain two off-shell formulations for a massless N = 1 superspin-ŝ multiplet in AdS 3 . These models prove to be related to each other by a superfield Legendre transformation in the flat superspace limit, but the duality is not lifted to the AdS case. Two out of the four series of N = 1 supersymmetric higher-spin models thus derived are new. The constructed massless N = 1 supersymmetric higher-spin actions in AdS 3 are used to formulate (i) higher-spin supercurrent multiplets in N = 1 AdS superspace; and (ii) new topologically massive higher-spin off-shell supermultiplets. Examples of N = 1 higher-spin supercurrents are given for models of a complex scalar supermultiplet. We also present two new off-shell formulations for a massive N = 1 gravitino supermultiplet in AdS 3 .
