Superoxide dismutase (SOD) as a selection criterion for triticale grain yield under drought stress: a comprehensive study on genomics and expression profiling, bioinformatics, heritability, and phenotypic variability

Abstract: Background The main objectives of this study were to find the possible structural association between the activity of enzymatic antioxidants and the grain yield of triticale plants as well as identifying the genotypic variability which might be effective on this association. Accordingly, expression levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) isozymes (Mn-SOD, Cu/Zn-SOD, and Fe-SOD) were appraised to distinguish any possible relationship between SOD expression and drought resistance of triticale. A nov… Show more

“…The descriptive and analysis of variance values recorded significant differences among the studied characteristics. Similar results [42] suggested that significant differences were recorded in the studied characteristics under different abiotic stress conditions in barley varieties. Among different types of legumes, Faba bean is salt-sensitive a [43].…”

“…Ahmad et al [43] suggested that sensitive cultivars are more vulnerable to damage relative to tolerance in pea plants and mulberry seedlings [43]. Similar results were reported in Solanum lycopersicum and Vicia faba [42]. Sodium and potassium ions share similar physiochemical structures and compete for Na and K ion uptake in the soil [47].…”

“…In the present investigation, among the 17 candidate genes, 15 SOD ’s genes in Brassica rapa exhibited a detectable expression genes in at least one of the 6 lesions which are significantly supported with the findings of Feng et al (2015) as investigated in MUSA acuminate. Field experiments and in silico analysis revealed that the superoxide dismutase (SOD) was the most influential antioxidant in resistance of triticale to drought stress; therefore, it could be used as an indirect selection index in early stages to distinguish resistant genotypes to drought stress ( Moucheshi et al, 2021 ). Moreover, Mn-SOD and Fe-SOD showed similar expression levels for both genotypes under drought stress in triticale, but the expression level Cu/Zn-SOD was higher in range in the root and shoot of the tolerant genotype than the susceptible genotype.…”

“…Plants have various SOD isozymes according to several research reports, which are grouped as copper/zinc (Cu/Zn-) SOD , manganese (Mn-) SOD , or iron (Fe-) SOD , identified on the basis of metal cofactor, protein folds, and subcellular localization ( Moucheshi et al, 2021 ). These SOD s are found in various cell compartments and these SOD s are found in various cell compartments ( Alscher et al, 2002 , Molina et al, 2013 , Alscher et al, 2002 , Filiz et al, 2014 , Feng et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Langroudi et al (2013) showed that drought stress can change essential oils contents of Rosmarinus o cinalis and affect the quantity of its nal production. Saed-Moucheshi et al (2021) stated that drought stress is able to increase the antioxidant contents of triticale as a result of the higher expression rate of related genes.…”
