Supernova 2008J: early time observations of a heavily reddened SN 2002ic-like transient

Abstract: Aims. We provide additional observational evidence that some Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) show signatures of circumstellar interaction (CSI) with hydrogen-rich material. , we conclude that their CSI emissions are similarly robust. The high-resolution spectrum reveals narrow emission lines produced from un-shocked gas characterized by a wind velocity of ∼50 km s −1 . We conclude that SN 2008J best matches an explosion of a SN Ia that interacts with its CSM.

“…This work analyzes a suitable subset including 89 objects from the current sample of low-redshift photometric data for SN Ia NIR Y JHK s -band LCs including data releases 1 and 2 from the Carnegie Supernova Project (Schweizer et al 2008;Contreras et al 2010;Stritzinger et al 2010Stritzinger et al , 2011Taddia et al 2012), now superseded by CSP data release 3 (Krisciunas et al 2017), the CfA (Wood-Vasey et al 2008;Friedman 2012;Friedman et al 2015), and other groups (e.g. Krisciunas et al 2000Krisciunas et al , 2004bKrisciunas et al ,c, 2005Krisciunas et al , 2007.…”

“…As the spectra contain a number of narrow features that are marginally significant we have employed a two-tailed z-test across our data (Sprinthall 2011). We only analyse those features where the two-tailed z-test gives a probability of more than ∼ 3σ (having a probability less than 0.27%) that the feature is not consistent with the continuum.…”

“…Many progenitor classes have been proposed (Gilfanov et al 2010, Wang & Han 2012, Maoz 2014, but observational evidences have not yet reached definitive conclusions on particular progenitor systems. The SD scenario is favored by the possible detections of circumstellar materials (CSM) around some SNe Ia through detections of strong ejecta-CSM interaction (Hamuy et al 2003, Wang et al 2004, Aldering et al 2006, Taddia et al 2012, Silverman et al 2013, Bochenek et al 2018 or evolving narrow absorption lines possibly due to CSM (Patat et al 2007, Sternberg et al 2011, Dilday et al 2012, while there are also observational findings suggesting no companion signatures for some SNe Ia (Li et al 2011a, Gonzalez et al 2012, Schaefer et al 2012, Olling et al 2015. This may suggest that SNe Ia have multiple progenitor systems, as favored by the discovery that SNe Ia with different ejecta velocities originate from distinct birthplace environments .…”
