Superhard CrN/MoN coatings with multilayer architecture

Abstract: The main regularities of the formation of microstructure and properties of multilayer nanostructured CrN/MoN films with periodically changing architecture of layers were considered. The transition metal nitride coatings with high hardness and wear resistance were obtained by vacuum-arc evaporation of the cathodes (Arc-PVD) in nitrogen atmosphere at several sets of predetermined deposition parameters. CrN/MoN multilayers were fabricated using constant nitrogen pressure of 0.4, 0.09 and 0.03 Pa. All samples were… Show more

“…Recently, CrN/MoN coating has been deposited on 12X18H9T stainless steel using Vacuum arc evaporation method by Pogrebnjak et al [109]. Multilayers of chromium and molybdenum are believed to induce the high value of hardness [110][111][112][113][114][115][116], and the observation on the well-defined multilayer structure of this study confirms it.…”

“…Structural features, physical-mechanical and tribological properties of multilayer structures can be reviewed in detail on the refractory and transition metals (Ti, Cr, Zr and Mo) based nitride coatings [2,10,29,82,108,118,119]. TiN/ZrN, TiN/MoN and CrN/MoN coatings were deposited on the steel substrates by the vacuum-arc evaporation method [8,99,100,120]. The vacuum chamber was equipped with a pressure control system and two evaporators with Ti, Cr or Mo targets.…”

“…Among the most investigated in this direction compositions can be attributed TiN/Cu [20], TiN/CrN [21], HfN/VN [22], TiN/-Ti [23], (Ti, Al)N/VN [24,25] and TiN/VN [25,26], etc., from materials as compatible with each other, so [27] and incompatible [29]. Results of investigations are prove that multicomponent and especially multilayer coatings considerably exceed coatings TiN by properties [7,19].…”

“…The most promising technology industrial obtaining coatings is vacuum-arc PVD method. This method is widely applied to obtaining coatings TiN [8], HfN [9], MoN [10,11], ZrN [12], CrN [13,14], NbN [15], and lately multicomponent (TiAl)N [16], (TiCr)N [17], (MoAl)N [18] and multiple element high-entropy materials [19]. However, the highest operational characteristics of manages to reach by engineering composite multilayer periodic structures.…”
