Purpose This study aims to analyse the strategic moves used by major tobacco corporations to thwart the ratification of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a detailed historical case study spanning 1988–2005 and encompassing the period leading up to Brazil’s FCTC ratification. The authors collected qualitative data from various sources to triangulate and develop a comprehensive historical account. Findings The historical analysis identified three distinct phases. First, the acquisition of a Brazilian cigarette factory, Souza Cruz, by British American Tobacco dramatically altered power dynamics, strengthening the position of the tobacco industry. The second phase regards the era of dictatorship and the efforts of various actors advocating against smoking and the tobacco industry. The third phase involved Brazil’s re-democratisation and the challenges of securing FCTC ratification, during which fierce industry opposition had to be overcome. Throughout these phases, the authors identified four key strategies used by multinational corporations (MNCs) in Brazil to uphold unsustainable practices and products that contradicted public interests instead of reforming them: shaping collective memory, dissimulation, re-presentation and redirecting attention. Originality/value This study contributes to critical international business research on emerging economies by examining how Brazil’s position in the global capitalist system has influenced its dependency and how MNCs produce and maintain cycles of poverty and unsustainable practices through the exploitation of power dynamics within the country.

This article analyze the theoretical perspective of dependency and super-exploitation of labor in Latin America and the world today, as well as method issues involved in empirical studies carried out based on these references. To do this, firstly, we systematize labor exploitation in Marx and in the Marxist theory of dependency as it was originally exposed by Brazilian Ruy Mauro Marini. Then, taking into account the research made in recent decades, we analyzed the studies and research agendas relating to this topic.

Resumo A partir da teoria do valor de Marx e dos aportes sociológicos de Ruy Mauro Marini, o artigo analisa as condições de trabalho dos(as) trabalhadores(as) da empresa Uber e empresas similares de aplicativos, assim como as formas de resistência que estão sendo empregadas por eles(as), nacional e internacionalmente. Para tanto, em um primeiro momento, aborda as implicações teóricas da exploração do trabalho realizada pelas plataformas digitais. Em seguida, a partir de dados de pesquisas realizadas junto aos trabalhadores e de dados de natureza secundária, analisa: i. as condições pelas quais vieram a ter maior adesão, visibilidade e difusão para outros setores; ii. as estratégias mundiais de mercado e de mudança das regulações trabalhistas implementadas por essas plataformas; iii. as formas de controle e de resistência que vêm sendo adotadas pelos trabalhadores. À guisa de conclusão, dada a característica autônoma de suas manifestações frente aos meios de convocação e às direções dos organismos sindicais tradicionais e, em particular, dadas as reivindicações imediatas de caráter internacionalista, o artigo apresenta uma possível agenda de comparação com as manifestações e os movimentos antiglobalização de massa até então em voga.
