Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Palm Carotenoids

Abstract: Abstract:The extraction of carotenoids from crude palm oil was carried out in a dynamic (flowthrough) supercritical fluid extraction system. The carotenoids obtained were quantified using off-line UV-visible spectrophotometry. The effects of operating pressure and temperature, flow rate of the supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO 2 ), sample size of feed used on the solubility of palm carotenoids were investigated. The results showed that the extraction of carotenoids was governed by its solubility in the SC-CO… Show more

“…Fractions from coriander seeds (Coriandrum sativum) were obtained using supercritical carbon dioxide using a semi-continuous lab-scale process, and tested for antioxidant activity [11]. The extraction of carotenoids from crude palm oil was carried out in a dynamic supercritical fluid extraction [12]; effects of operating pressure and temperature, flow rate of the supercritical CO 2 , and sample size of feed used on the solubility of palm carotenoids were investigated. Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a popular kitchen herb and is a member of the mint (Labiatae) family.…”

“…In addition to being a raw material for MAG production, CPO is also a potential source of natural carotenoids as they are present at up to 500-700 ppm (Wei et al, 2005). To extract and recover carotenoids from CPO, several methods have been developed.…”

“…The highest overall oil yield was obtained at pressure 25 Mpa (10.22 %), while the lowest pressure of 10 Mpa generated only 1.92%. This phenomenon can be easily explained by the basic principle of sub-critical fluid extraction which states that as the pressure increases the density of sub-critical CO2 approaches of a liquid, it will result in an increase in the solvating power [11]. Futhermore, as the density of solvent increased, the intermolecular interaction of solutes also rose [12].…”
