The latest techniques for realization of an outage-free Digital Microwave Radio (DMR) are presented. Three major techniques, Trellis-Coded 256QAM modulation, Super Multi-Carrier (SMC) Transmission and Microwave Signal Processing (MSP) are described. BER and Signature characteristics of Trellis-Coded 256QAM system is simulated. The result indicates its validity as a fading countermeasure. Viterbi-decoder LSI and effect of phase error on TCM modem is also presented. The experiment using 4,8,40-carrier 256QAM modem shows an overall outage improvement factor of nearly 500 times due to 40-carrier system. Lastly, Microwave Signal Processing (MSP) technique, which means DSP including IF-stage (carrier) signals for DMR systems, is presented. An all digital 256QAM modulator is constructed and shows superior performance with no adjustment. These studies have prospects for an outage free DMR system in the near future.
