Oxidative coupling of quinones and aromatic compounds by palladium(II) acetate

“…The arylation of 2-phenyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2a) with p-dichlorobenzene gave 1,4-benzoquinones that bear two different aryl substituents. Treatment of 1,4-naphthoquinone (5) with palladium acetate in acetic add containing arenes also gave the corresponding 2-aryl-l,4-naphthoquinones in good yields. The reaction of 1,2-naphthoquinone (7) with benzene gave 4-phenyl-1,2-naphthoquinone (8a),8 but 3phenyl-1,2-naphthoquinone9 was not detected.…”
