“…Among sunn pests, the species of the genera Eurygaster and Aelia (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) are the most prominent on wheat in Europe (Ruiz et al 2001; Vaccino et al 2006), Asia (Kinaci et al 1998) and northern Africa (Vidal 1949; Parker et al 2001). In particular, the most noxious pests are E. integriceps in south-eastern Europe and Asia (Critchley 1998), and Eurygaster maura (L.) and Eurygaster austriaca (Schrank) in western Europe (Ruiz et al 2001; Vaccino et al 2006).…”

“…The typical sign of infestation is the presence of a black central pinpoint on the grain surrounded by a pale or discolored halo produced by the pest's feeding, piercing and cutting of tissues while injecting digestive enzymes, proteases and amylases through the salivary canal to liquefy food into a nutrient-rich slurry (Critchley 1998;Hariri et al 2000). The salivary proteinase enzymes injected into the seed cause destruction of gluten and reduce the doughbaking quality (Kinaci et al 1998;Köksel et al 2002;Kinaci and Kinaci 2004). Because of the proteolytic enzyme content, damaged wheat flour used for breadmaking produces a runny and sticky dough leading to a low bread volume and an unacceptable texture (Kinaci and Kinaci 2007;Ravan et al 2009).…”

“…Infection of growing wheat and barley crops with insects of the genus Eurygaster Lap. (Sunn bug) leads to substantial losses of crop yield and quality in many countries including parts of Eastern and Southern Europe, West and Central Asia, and North Africa. More than 10 million Ha of wheat, nearly half of which lies in the Near East, is attacked by the Sunn bug . Losses from Sunn bug infestation result both from seedling loss and failed germination of damaged seed.…”
