Sulphide Capacity and Sulphur Solubility in CaO-Al2O3 and CaO-Al2O3-CaF2 Slags

Abstract: The sulphide capacity and the solubility limit of CaS in CaO-Al 2 O 3 and CaO-Al 2 O 3 -CaF 2 slags have been studied at the temperatures from 1 823 to 1 923 K by the equilibrium measurement of gas-slag reaction. The sulphide capacity and the solubility of CaS in these two slag systems increase with increasing CaO content and decreasing ratio of N Al 2 O 3 /N CaF 2 . The sulphur in CaO-Al 2 O 3 -CaF 2 slag negatively deviated from Henry's law in the high concentration range of sulphur in slag, and the activity… Show more

“…11,12) Banya et al 11) determined the sulfide capacity of CaO-Al 2 O 3 slag by the gas-slag equilibration technique using a CO-CO 2 -SO 2 -Ar gas mixture under the oxygen partial pressures controlled by CO 2 -CO gas mixture at 1 873 K. They kept sulfur content in slag below 0.8 mass% in order to avoid CaS formation which could significantly affect the sulfide capacity of the slag. Ozturk and Turkdogan 12) determined the sulfide capacity of CaS saturated CaO-Al 2 O 3 slag from the equilibrium sulfur distribution between Fe-S-Al-O melts and the slag in contact with pure solid CaS under Ar atmosphere at 1 873 K, assuming that the oxygen partial pressure was controlled by Al-O deoxidation equilibrium in liquid iron.…”

“…But Ban-ya 9,10) and Ban-ya et al 11) commented on the paper by C. Wagner,5) and it was emphasized that the sulfide capacity is unable to be applied as a measure of the basicity index of the slag.…”

“…However, the relation of the equilibrium constant and activity coefficient is not so simple in multicomponents solution like molten slag, flux and salt. As the more simple case, Ban-ya et al 11) showed the treatment of Fe-Ni-H system as follows.…”
