To avert excessive sulfuric acid exhaustion in the classical leaching procedure and to avoid leaching of other undesirable impurities, proper alkaline leaching has been achieved for dolostone of Gabal Allouga, Southwestern Sinai, Egypt. The relevant factors for alkaline leaching of a technological sample assaying 1.2% Cu and 0.15% U were examined using a mixture of Na 2 CO 3 / (NH 4) HCO 3 solution upon two samples namely; roasted sample at 540°C and raw materials un-roasted. The leaching kinetic results showed that the leaching procedure of uranium and copper from dolostone is controlled by shrinking core kinetic model 1-2/3(X)−(1−X) 2/3 = k d t.

Abstract:The rapid development of the global alumina industry has led to a considerable increase in the production alumina and processing of alumina from non-bauxitic sources. Lampang clays comprise various minerals that contain about 22.70 wt% of extractable alumina. Local clay was ground, activated by calcination and treated with sulfuric acid to extract alumina. In the activation step, the effects of temperature and time on the extraction of alumina and iron were investigated. The leaching experiments were performed on clay samples with particle sizes less than 200 mesh. The samples were calcined at different temperatures, ranging from 450 o C to 1050 o C, and for different periods, ranging from 30 to 150 min. The optimum conditions for the extraction of alumina from Lampang clay include grinding the clay to pass through a 200 mesh sieve, calcining the ground clay at 750 o C for 30 min, extracting the alumina from the calcined clay by leaching with 3M sulfuric acid, and using an acid to clay ratio of 80 wt% at 100 o C for 120 min. An aluminum dissolution efficiency of 95.1 % was achieved under the conditions that resulted in the maximum dissolution efficiency of iron (26.6 %).

The potentiality of Escherichia coli dead biomass for biosorption of rare earth elements (REEs) and uranium (VI) from chloride leach liquor of laterite ore was evaluated. The effects of different acid, different concentration of hydrochloric acid, contact time, solid/liquid phase ratio and temperature on leaching efficiency of laterite ore were investigated. The optimum leaching conditions were 2M acid with a Solid/Liquid ratio of 1/20 at 90 °C for 4 h and using an ore grain size of-60 mesh. The maximum recovery of REEs 70% and uranium 85% from chloride leach liquor of laterite ore using E. coli biomass was studied. The optimum biosorption conditions were as follows: 60 min as contact time, 4 g/100 mL as the biosorbent dosage, 50 °C as temperature and 175 rpm as agitation speed using alkaline pretreated E. coli with 0.2 N NaOH. The biosorption mechanism was explored by characterization of the biosorbent before and after biosorption using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that E. coli was a good choice as biosorbent agent for REEs and uranium ions removal from aqueous solution.
