Sulfonic acid functionalized ionic liquids for dissolution of metal oxides and solvent extraction of metal ions

Abstract: New sulfonic acid functionalized ionic liquids (SAFILs) with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anions were synthesized. These ionic liquids are strong Brønsted acids and can solubilize metal oxides. Water-immiscible SAFILs were used as organic phases in solvent extraction studies.

“…Making inert metal oxides accessible for dissolution, more acidic IL cations with a sulfonic acid functional group could by applied, as Binnemans et al reported. Thus in a 1:1 mixture of different sulfonic acid functionalised ILs and water, stoichiometric amounts of cobalt oxides, Fe 2 O 3 and smaller amounts of Al 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , TiO 2 and WO 3 were dissolved at 80 • C [105]. Other ILs with sulfamic or alkylsulfuric acid functional groups at the cation show a similar or even higher acidity and some dissolution ability for rather unreactive metal oxides [109,110].…”

“…Several strong Brønsted acid ionic liquids were developed for solubilizing metal oxides and other inorganic compounds. These include sulfonic-acid-functionalized ionic liquids [130], alkyl sulfuric acid ionic liquids [131] and sulfamic-acid-derived ionic liquids [132] is inevitably leached when attempting to dissolve the YOX. Since the HALO phosphor can make up as much as 50 wt% of the lamp-phosphor waste powder, this dissolution process consumes large volumes of acid.…”

“…Some water‐saturated hydrophobic IL/ZI mixtures have been able to dissolve or extract water‐soluble heme proteins, such as cytochrome c whilst keeping their higher‐ordered structure. Very recently, Binnemans and coworkers have reported that some ZI/Brønsted acid mixtures with a sulfonic acid moiety showed liquid–liquid phase separation with water after adding ethanol or different acids . These mixtures dissolved metal oxides and extracted them from a water‐rich phase into an IL‐rich phase .…”

These mixtures dissolved metal oxides and extracted them from a water‐rich phase into an IL‐rich phase . Work reported by both Binnemans and our group implies enticing possibilities for finding new phenomena based on the mixture of specifically designed ZIs and also of ZIs with Brønsted acids.…”
