Sulfonic Acid Derivative-Modified SBA-15, PHTS and MCM-41 Mesoporous Silicas as Carriers for a New Antiplatelet Drug: Ticagrelor Adsorption and Release Studies

Abstract: Three mesoporous, siliceous materials, i.e., SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous), PHTS (Plugged Hexagonal Templated Silica) and MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter), functionalized with a sulfonic acid derivative, were successfully prepared and applied as the carriers for the poorly water-soluble drug, ticagrelor. The siliceous carriers were characterized using nitrogen sorption analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and elemental analysis. The adsorption studies were co… Show more

“…They have claimed that the absence of the melting peak of doxycycline hyclate in the DSC curve resulted from the formation of an inclusion complex between drug molecules and β-cyclodextrin. Moreover, the disappearance of DSC peaks characteristic for melting points of other drugs such as aprepitant [ 33 ], ketoprofen [ 34 ], ticagrelor [ 35 ] have been reported for various mesoporous silicas and suggested both the successful encapsulation of drug molecules and their amorphous or semi-crystalline nature inside the pores.…”

“…We hope that this simple procedure can be easily applied for other sorbents and environmental samples so that methodological biases introduced by SPE in aquatic research can be more conveniently assessed in future. It should be noted that classical adsorption models such as Thomas model, 54 Langmuir isotherm, 55 or Dubinin-Astakhov isotherm 56 are difficult to be applied due to the heterogeneous and complex nature of aquatic DOM. Although we do not know precisely how many organic compounds are contained in water, mass spectrometry yields at least 10,000 different molecular masses and an unknown dimension of structural isomers within each sample.…”
