Suitability of Aerial Photogrammetry for Dump Documentation and Volume Determination in Large Areas

Abstract: The study presented in this paper analyses the results of measurements and data processing for documentation and quantification of material in heaps in large areas, where UAVs may no longer be effective due to a large range. Two test heaps were selected from a whole area, where the aim was to confirm the suitability of using the method of digital aerial photogrammetry by manned (crewed) aerial vehicle. For comparison, a commonly used GNSS RTK method was also used. Terrestrial laser scanning was chosen as the c… Show more

“…Drones allow surveys of large areas to be carried out with high reliability in a shorter time than using traditional techniques such as Topographic Total Stations (TTS) and GNSS. UAVs make it possible to obtain something fundamental for our model, which is to have continuous, sufficiently precise information of the entire work area, including places that are difficult to access: in our case, the sinkholes [38][39][40].…”

“…; for an example, see Figure 6) (Iizuka et al, 2018). It is also worth mentioning that there is one more branch distinguished by other features, namely high-altitude photogrammetry carried out by high-budget agencies and private companies in possession of aircraft equipped with optoelectronic heads or drones with airframes capable of similar tasks (Kovanič et al, 2021). They have unique features that make this type of method suitable for collecting large-area data with lower resolution requirements.…”

“…The typical use of IBMR photogrammetry can be found in RPAS photogrammetry. Basic RPAS's are equipped with a simple RGB (red-green-blue) camera, which is used for orthophoto production and a DSM (digital surface model), or a textured mesh model [9][10][11].…”

“…In the last twenty years, technologies have changed dramatically. Many authors have attempted to use terrestrial laser scanning in all forms and IBMR photogrammetry in forestry, with varying degrees of success and possibilities for implementation in practice [7][8][9]11,20]. Other methods such as ALS or satellite remote sensing have been used too [33].…”
