Suitability analysis of new air quality monitoring stations in Krakow as related to assessment of spatial and temporal variability of PM10 concentrations

Abstract: The exceedance of air quality standards in urban agglomerations leads local communities to take actions that aim to improve aerosanitary conditions. For these actions to be efficient, it is essential to regularly collect accurate quantitative data that is able to characterize the degree of ambient air pollution. In order to achieve this objective, air quality monitoring systems are constantly being extended. In this paper, the usefulness of newly established air quality measuring stations in Krakow was examine… Show more

“…This methodology yielded satisfactory results of the OSPM model accuracy. Its basal assumption was to determine pollution background based on the 1-h measurements for 2017 from the urban background station in Krakow [44]. For most of the year, these data originated from the station located at Bujaka St., which measures all of the pollutants considered in the study and ozone as well.…”

“…street canyon, in which the traffic-type air quality monitoring station is located and the highest concentrations of PM 10 and NO x in Krakow are observed [2]. In the case of the locations of the remaining air quality monitoring stations in Krakow [44], expected reduction rate of the NO x concentrations in the air as a result of implementation of the clean transport zone ranges from 1-20 µg/m 3 [5].…”

“…This phenomenon significantly affects the environment [ 3 ], quality of life [ 4 ], and the structure and functioning of the city [ 5 ]. Road transport is the main linear source of atmospheric pollution in cities [ 6 , 7 ], next to other point sources, which include pollution from industrial sources (chimneys) as well as from municipal and household sources, related to individual heating as well as the accumulation and disposal of waste [ 8 ]. A dynamic increase in the number of vehicles driving on the roads, which is accompanied by a slow development of the transport network [ 9 ], causes a noticeable drop in the average speed of vehicle traffic.…”

“…In works [56,57] the correlation analyses and the dependent samples t-test was used, with respect to PM 10 concentration data, in suitability analysis of established in 2016 and 2017 air quality monitoring stations in Krakow (after a significant expansion made in 2015-2017 in the field of PM 10 concentration measurements). Using statistical methods, the impact of meteorological factors on air quality in Krakow was also assessed [58][59][60][61][62][63][64] and source apportionment analyzes were performed based on the principal component analysis (PCA) [24,[65][66][67] or the positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model [68][69][70][71].…”
