Suicidality and Personality Disorders in Adolescence

Abstract: The prevalence of personality disorders is higher among suicidal adolescent inpatients (15.3% out of 163) than among nonsuicidal adolescent inpatients (8.6% out of 374). Among the personality disorders, the borderline syndromes or emotionally unstable personality disorders were more frequent in the suicidal adolescents. Limited emotional control, intolerance of frustration, and impulsiveness are important characteristics of suicidal adolescents.

“…Both studies also suggest that treatments may be effective within a relatively short time span. More research on effective treatments for this group of patients is warranted because adolescents with PDs are at greater risk for having a broad range of problems than adolescents without PDs [4,8,9,15-17]. Furthermore, these adolescents have a greater risk of developing problems in adulthood [18-20].…”

“…A 6.5-year follow-up study reported that frustration intolerance positively predicted the severity of depressive symptoms [42]. Research also revealed that frustration intolerance is a crucial personality trait in adolescents with suicidal behavior [43]. Hostility denotes an emotional and expressive characteristic that indicates the potential intent to be aggressive toward and assault others [44].…”

“…Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that PDs are common in adolescents (see, for example, Feenstra, Busschbach, Verheul, & Hutsebaut, ; Grilo et al, ; Johnson et al, ; Westen, Shedler, Durett, Glass, & Martens, ). An effective treatment for this group of patients is warranted because adolescents with PDs are at a greater risk for having a broad range of problems than adolescents without PDs (see, for example, Braun‐Scharm, ; Johnson et al, ; Kasen et al, ; Lavan & Johnson, ; Serman, Johnson, Geller, Kanost, & Zacharapoulou, ; Westen et al, ). Furthermore, these adolescents also have a greater risk of developing problems in adulthood (Chen, Cohen, Kasen, & Johnson, ; Daley et al, ; Daley, Rizzo, & Gunderson, ; Johnson, Chen, & Cohen, ; Johnson et al, ; Johnson et al, ; Levy et al, ).…”
