Ageing is a physiological process, and inevitable psychological and physical changes occur after the age of 65 in every individual. Elderly suicide is a crucial public health concern that is still largely ignored worldwide. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of emergency medical services by geriatric patients due to suicide. Materials and Method: We obtained the demographic and clinical information of the patients from the records. We retrospectively examined the data of all patients, who are 65 and older, enrolled in Turkey for the suicide attempt between September 2018 and August 2019. Results: Our study included 769 cases. There was a statistically significant difference between the two genders in terms of the number of completed suicides (p <0.001). The most common suicide method was drug use (30.8%). In total, 36.7% of women and 62.7% of men used violent methods for suicide. We found a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of violent method usage (p <0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the age groups in terms of completed suicide percentages (p = 0.008), and the cases reported from urban and rural areas in terms of mortality (p <0.001). Conclusion: The percentage of completed suicides increases with age, and the careful evaluation of suicide attempts is vital in reducing the risk of suicide-related death. The process starting from the moment of notification of suicide attempt to the emergency dispatch centre must be managed effectively and quickly by trained and experienced medical teams.

The temporal dimensions and tendencies, including some characteristic features of suicide in Turkey during the social transformation process, are the subject of this study with a focus on the provinces and differentiation on a regional scale. The number of suicides in Turkey and the characteristic features of those committing suicide during the years 1974-2013 have been collected in the ‘Suicide Statistics’ yearbook within this context. Both the suicide numbers as well as the crude suicide rates in Turkey have increased from the last quarter of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century. As a matter of fact the number of suicides which was 788 in 1975 increased at a rate of 304.7% to become 3189 in 2013. The crude suicide rate per 100,000 population increased from 1.95 in 1975 to 1.69 in 1980, to 2.42 in 1990, to 2.67 in 2000 and increased to 4.19 in 2013. Although crude suicide rates are smaller than those in most European countries, the fact that there is a rapidly increasing trend indicates that it has started to become a significant public health problem.

Aim Studies have shown that the causes and methods of suicides differ among young and old individuals; consequently, it is important to identify the subgroups that are at high risk for suicide to aid in suicide prevention. The present study compared the causes and methods of suicides between 2002 and 2013 among older adults aged 65–69 years, 70–74 years and ≥75 years by completed crude suicide rate and sex. Methods Data detailing sex, the causes and methods of completed suicides in older adults aged 65–69 years, 70–74 years and ≥75 years that occurred between 2002 and 2013 were drawn from the Turkish Statistical Institute. Results In all age groups, crude suicide rates were threefold more frequent among men than among women. In both sexes, the most frequent suicide cause was mental illness. In the group aged 65–69 years, the most common cause of suicide was financial difficulty for men and marital conflict for women. The most frequent suicide method among older adults of both sexes was hanging. In all age groups, firearms use was more common among men and jumping from a high place was more common among women. Conclusion The present findings suggest that the most common suicide cause in both sexes and in all age groups was mental illness in Turkey. To prevent suicidal behavior in older adults,; it is important to diagnose mental disorders, such as mood disorders and substance abuse, and to treat them quickly.
