Sudden Death of a Young Adult Associated with Bacillus cereus Food Poisoning

Abstract: A lethal intoxication case, which occurred in Brussels, Belgium, is described. A 20-year-old man died following the ingestion of pasta contaminated with Bacillus cereus. Emetic strains of B. cereus were isolated, and high levels of cereulide (14.8 g/g) were found in the spaghetti meal. CASE REPORTOn 1 October 2008, a 20-year-old man became sick after eating a meal of leftovers of spaghetti with tomato sauce, which had been prepared 5 days before and left in the kitchen at room temperature. “…Interestingly, the results reported in this paper show that exposure to paenilides from P. tundrae E8a provoked mitochondrial dysfunction leading to metabolic acidosis equally as effectively as cereulide. With cereulide, this occurred at exposure concentrations relevant to those in foods associated with severe human food poisonings (35,48). The findings in this paper indicate that paenilides are also potential food-poisoning agents.…”

“…These symptoms are similar to those seen with Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins. Symptoms usually resolve within 6 to 24 h, but rare case reports have documented fulminant hepatic failure and death associated with emetic B. cereus (31)(32)(33)(34). The emetic toxin is most often found in starchy foods, such as fried rice, pastry, and noodles (35).…”

“…Green tea extract is richer in polyphenols compared to black tea, which is further composed of www.mjms.usm.my failure, probably due to mitochondrial toxicity. Mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism is inhibited, which is indicated by microvesicular steatosis in the liver (15,16). Moreover, additives in the form of preservatives and flavour enhancers might be contaminated to produce serious side effects (3).…”
