Mengebier and Jenkins (1964), using asexual Dugesia dorotocephala, also reported evidence of the presence of the cytochrome oxidase system but found that maximum succinoxidase activity occurred at a pH of 8.3 rather than at the usually accepted optimum of pH 7.4. They suggested this was correlated with the ability of planarians to convert their external medium to a constant pH which, in their laboratory, was found to be 7.9 to 8.0.…”
