“…They found a typical cytochrome oxidase system to be present which was subject to KCN inhibition and CO poisoning in the dark. Mengebier and Jenkins (1964), using asexual Dugesia dorotocephala, also reported evidence of the presence of the cytochrome oxidase system but found that maximum succinoxidase activity occurred at a pH of 8.3 rather than at the usually accepted optimum of pH 7.4. They suggested this was correlated with the ability of planarians to convert their external medium to a constant pH which, in their laboratory, was found to be 7.9 to 8.0.…”
