Successful treatment of cytomegalovirus encephalitis in a patient with Hodgkin's disease in remission

Abstract: Cytomegalovirus encephalitis is a rare but life-threatening infection in non-AIDS patients. To our knowledge, no case that followed conventional treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma has been reported. We present a patient with Hodgkin's disease in complete remission after combined modality treatment who was succesfully treated with a combination of ganciclovir and foscarnet.

Van Droogenbroeck et al [8] have described a CMV infection of the central nervous system in an HD patient in remission as a rare complication following conventional polychemotherapy. The risk of developing CMV infections is much higher if an additional immunodeficiency exists.…”

“…CMV infection with clinically expression was described in normal subjects, but is far more frequent in immunosuppressed patients -AIDS, graft organs and, rarely, Hodgkin's disease. In the literature there are a few cases of CMV infection with clinical expression in Hodgkin's disease, with specific gastritis [1], cutaneous [2], retinitis [3], encephalitis [4,5].…”
